Charles Self

Charles Self is a Chief Operating Officer, Chief Compliance Officer and Board Director who is known for his ability to architect an accelerated revenue topline, as well as for his government regulation expertise with financial services organizations. He has repeatedly been recruited by investment management organizations to grow assets under management and upgrade investment strategy and processes. Chuck has created new products for these organizations including SEC-registered and offshore mutual funds and implemented regulatory compliance procedures for them.

Chuck’s ability to repeat this success pattern is routed in his ability to analyze complexity and distill it down to the big picture leverage points. He takes this strategic base and brings it down to the operating level, coupled with an uncanny ability to communicate the mission to the organization. At the Board level, he injects this same perspective, which he has done for both private company and nonprofit Boards.

Chuck is currently Chief Operating Officer, Chief Compliance Officer, and Chief Investment Officer of iSectors, where he has increased revenues by over 75% in less than three years and launched an NASDAQ listed exchange-traded fund. The fund was nominated for Best New Asset Allocation ETF by ETF.com. He previously served in senior marketing and client servicing roles where he introduced his alternative investment management firms to the institutional market and their consultants.

As Chief Investment Officer for the Teachers Retirement System of Illinois with over $25 billion under management, he led the overhaul of the investment program and eliminated conflicts of interest. For these actions, the organization was named 2002 Public Plan Sponsor of the Year by Money Management Letter.

During his tenure with ABN AMRO North America, he managed the $22 billion investment portfolio of the bank. He was a member of the bank’s asset/liability committee where he recommended and implemented a 50% increase in the bank’s portfolio to lock-in extraordinary high spreads during the Russian financial crisis in 1998. Chuck was also on the team that created a Cayman Island-based global money market fund. Chuck began his business career in investment management with the Northern Trust, Meridian Insurance, and the Prudential Insurance Company of America. He is widely recognized for a genuine interest in mentoring promising younger executives, a half dozen of whom lead major corporations today.

In his Outside Director activity, Chuck is active with The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) at both the national and chapter levels. He has held a variety of private and nonprofit corporate director seats. He currently Chairs the Investment Committee for Governmental Insurance Managers, where he also serves on the Audit Committee. He was the first Board President of the Bright Promise Fund for Urban Christian Education. Chuck was also the Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair of Girl Scouts – Prairie Winds and the Avery Coonley School. Additionally, he served as a Director of the New Covenant Trust Company, a state-chartered, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency-regulated special purpose banking organization that is a subsidiary of the Presbyterian Foundation.
